Problems Fire Ants Cause

It can be hard to think that a small ant can cause so much pain and discomfort, but it's possible. The biggest issue with fire ants is that, most commonly, it’s not just one ant biting or stinging you. Instead, bites from fire ants usually come from several ants at a time, and these attacks can cause more damage than just a little pain. Not only will their bites cause a burning, itching sensation, swelling, and redness but, if not treated properly, these bites can become infected, especially if scratched excessively. And if you happen to be allergic to their stings, your reaction could be much worse. If you aren't sure, consider talking to your doctor to find out whether or not you're allergic to fire ant bites.

Identifying Fire Ants

Fire ants are much like every other ant. They have six legs, three body segments, and they scavenge for food as a way of life. The big difference that sets fire ants apart from other common ants in the area is their distinct, reddish-brown to reddish-black color, and their unique stingers, located at the end of their bodies.

Fire Ant Prevention Tips

There are two sides to fire ant prevention: outdoor prevention and indoor prevention. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep fire ants outside where they belong:

  • Make sure ants don't have a way in. Inspect your home’s exterior foundation for any cracks or gaps. If you find any of these trouble areas, seal them using a caulking gun.

  • Reduce food attractants around your home. Fire ants, by nature, are omnivores. These ants will eat almost anything that we will. To keep fire ants away, do your best to keep food preparation areas, kitchens, and dining rooms clean and absent of foods that fire ants may decide to scavenge.
